BME 5110

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2021-2022.

This course explores the interface of stem cell biology and bioengineering and will examine how quantitative analysis and modeling approaches inform stem cell-based biotechnologies and medical therapies. The course covers (i) cell and molecular biotechnology concepts, (ii) embryonic and adult stem cell biology fundamentals, (iii) analysis, design, and production of biomolecular therapies to regulate stem cell function, and (iv) generation of biomimetic and bioreactor environments to generate cell biotechnological products, including stem cell derivatives. BME 5110 and BME 6110 are taught as integrated courses, with shared lectures but distinct discussion sections. BME 5110 emphasizes technologies and bioengineering principles and is appropriate for advanced undergraduate (with instruction permission) and Master's students. BME 6110 emphasizes applied concepts and engages with primary research literature, and is appropriate for Ph.D. students.
