We review the basis of finite element analysis (FEA), such as shape function construction and the continuous Galerkin method. The initial focus will be on FEA for the convection-diffusion equation, streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin formulation, FEA for the Stokes problem and the Navier-Stokes equations, and variational multiscale method. We then introduce the weak formulation of structural mechanics, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian technique, and provide an overview of interface-capturing methods for fluid-structure interaction. If time allows, we will cover generalized-alpha time integration schemes, coupled boundary conditions for lumped-parameter networks, and specialized iterative methods for incompressible flows with an emphasis on cardiovascular applications.
