This course will focus on work and occupations in the contemporary economy. It will cover issues related to getting a job and the types of work in the contemporary economy, as well as the changing nature of work (e.g., the rise of nonstandard and precarious work, job polarization, flexible work arrangements). It will explore how factors such as race, gender, and sexual orientation play a role in career decisions and labor market outcomes. And, it will examine how workers experience and make sense of these new conditions of work. This class will draw on both quantitative and qualitative studies of work to explore these questions.
