Compared to vision the sense of hearing is vastly under-rated and under-appreciated. Most animals, including humans, live in world of sound. Social behavior is a matter of communication and auditory signals mediate the predator-prey and reproductive interactions that are prominent in both natural and sexual selection. This course is aimed at students interested in the ways that animals hear and communicate using acoustic signals and in humans—how and why “music works.” The sensory neurobiology of hearing and listening to sound as well as the neuromotor mechanism for producing sounds will be examined in the context of the behavioral acts that are acoustically mediated. The course will consist of Zoom lectures and discussions by instructor followed later in the term by class presentations.
