Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of fundamental research, quantitative equity security selection, and equity portfolio management. Students have the unique opportunity as part of this course to manage the Cayuga Fund, a student managed fund with $1 million in assets under management from the Cornell University endowment.  Students will serve as fundamental analysts, quantitative analysts and portfolio specialists for the fund. Instruction on analysis, portfolio management and the investment business are included in this course. Students are expected to assume leadership for managing the Fund by the end of the semester. The experience is similar to that offered to rising analysts and portfolio managers in buy-side investment firms. Students are required to enroll into the course in the fall where they learn credit research techniques, maintain their stock coverage and continue managing the Fund.

When Offered Fall, Spring.

Permission Note Enrollment limited: students must apply formally; if number of applicants exceeds 12, admission is competitive and merit-based. Priority given to: second-year MBAs who successfully completed either NBA 5060 or finance immersion. Non-Johnson students who successfully completed NBA 4120 are eligible to apply.

Comments Students must commit to taking NBA 5121 (Cayuga Fund, 3 credits) in the fall and NBA 5120 (1.5 credits) in the spring. Students will be assigned to sectors and portfolio teams prior to the first day of class and must prepare fundamental micro-industry definitions before the Fundamental Module begins. Students are encouraged to review the format of S&P sector reports and login to their Capital IQ accounts (email sent directly to students).
