Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.
This seminar maps the interdisciplinary field of performance studies and mines it for research methods in ethnography and for work with archives. We will engage recent and foundational texts in performance studies and progress through a series of practical assignments through which students will identify and examine major debates in the field, understand and utilize research methods central to the field, and explore how these methods might contribute to their own doctoral research. Topics approached include performance and performativity; oral history and encounter; ethnography and activism; colonization and tourism; law, violence, and reconciliation; discourse and political change; aesthetic and quotidian performance.
