Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2019-2020.
This course has two basic goals: the first, to expose students to great music from as many diverse musical cultures and traditions as possible; and second, to provide these students with the analytical tools, resources, and critical listening strategies required in order to understand and engage with the music from a variety of historic, cultural, and analytical perspectives. Analytical methodologies will range across the spectrum from those strictly informed by ethnographic considerations on one hand, to methodologies focusing on universal features and processes of musical production independent of any additional cultural and historic context on the other. Analytical samples will include music from China, Central Asia, Japan, Vietnam, India, Java, Bali, West Africa, South Africa, Brazil, N. America, The Balkans, and Central Europe.
