Fundamentals of Energy and Mineral Resources

Course Description

Earth's growing population requires resources for the basics of life and increasing standards of living. Energy from many sources, numerous minerals, and water are critical for human existence, and are increasingly linked in the context of sustainability. For future generations, resources must be discovered and cleanly exploited, even as efforts to improve efficiency and increase recycling continue. To succeed, we must attempt to quantify the energy, water and mineral requirements needed in the future, including changes in demand related to new and emerging technologies. We must also fully understand the Earth, including the critical processes that concentrate resources and the surficial and atmospheric conditions that challenge resource extraction. Finally, we need to be aware of the social and political dimensions that regulate resources and at times challenge of oppose extraction.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Recommended prerequisite: previous course in geology.
