This course explores new trends in cloud computing systems, with a focus on understanding the research challenges that will arise as we use cloud computing to solve challenging new problems. The class will center on a mix of readings, discussion, and individualized research activities. Topics of interest include the cloud technologies that will support smart homes, smart power grids, smart cars and highways, and other IoT applications, with an emphasis on the cloud edge: the layer of microservices and infrastructures that can support real-time responses as events occur outside the datacenter that require quick handling. Technologies of interest include application creation using Spark/DataBricks RDDs and Tensor Flow, and hardware accelerators such as RDMA and NVRAM, NetFPGA and GPU clusters, TPUs, etc.
