Feeding the Human Animal: Visions of Thriving and Surviving Abstract: More people than ever are curious about the interconnectedness of our lives, as it becomes clear that our health and happiness depend upon vital networks of people, energy, climate, food, markets, governance, biodiversity, community, and relationship. These compelling American novels provide insight into the complex human ecosystem, highlighting the challenges of sustainably feeding our many needs; the tensions between living well and merely living; and our profound dependence on the earth and its natural systems, of which we are of course already a part.
