Business and nonprofit corporations are well-recognized to be "legal persons" that can hold and exercise rights in their own names and, in some cases, operate in perpetuity.  However, trusts, foundations, municipalities and nation states can also be characterized as legal persons.  Historically, animals were granted legal personhood in certain circumstances in medieval Europe, extended families were treated as legal persons both in classical Rome and in ancient China.
