This course examines the impact of emerging technologies in the workplace and their influence on organizational behavior and management strategies. The course will have a particular focus on algorithms employed in hiring and retention, and applications used to monitor employer productivity. The course also documents the impact of big data on the workplace, particularly employee health data. The course discusses the changing nature of work as influenced both by technological advancements and changing attitudes about the role of work and work/life balance. The course explores the connection between greater worker surveillance, the concomitant quantification of the worker, and the push for "on-demand" work and the implications of technological developments for inequality, worker privacy, productivity, and management strategies. The course also engages with employment laws that moderate the use of technology in the workplace with a particular focus on laws regarding the collection of employee data.
