Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2017-2018.
An interdisciplinary course on how to do effective scientific outreach in environmental biology. The goals of the course are 1) to train students to speak about science with passion and clarity, 2) for the students to be able to teach science effectively in classrooms, science centers, and in large community outreach events, and 3) to train a generation of civically engaged scientific outreach leaders. Students participate in the 'Naturalist Outreach Program' to give STEM presentations on understanding nature to students throughout CNY. Class size is limited. Students who wish to enroll should read blogs.cornell.edu/naturalistoutreach and contact the instructor with information on your biological passion, background, and reason for taking the class.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: one college-level biology course.
Course Attribute (CU-CEL, CU-SBY)
- Students will be able to give knowledgeable, well-organized and dynamic hands-on presentations. Students learn how to assemble and design illustrative display materials.
- Students will understand the complexities to design, organize, and manage an outreach event.
- Students gain experience with the pleasures and realities of teaching children. Additionally, students interact with teachers to integrate their presentations with the curricular needs of the class.
- Students learn to synthesize biological concepts and create experiential learning materials for use by others

Naturalist Outreach Practicum is an unusual course for students who want to improve their scientific outreach skills and speak in school classrooms. You must obtain Dr. Rayor's permission to participate in this class by 1) Reading the Natural Outreach Web sites: http://www.entomology.cornell.edu/naturalistoutreach.html and http://blackboard.cornell.edu for Entom 3350 and 2) Contact Dr. Rayor (LSR1, 255-8406) with information about your motivation for taking the class and pertinent experience. This permission process will improve the match between students with a desire for civic engagement in science and this practical course. Dr. Rayor will rapidly inform you of her decision and provide you with an enrollment code.
