Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2017-2018.
Covers basic chemical concepts, such as reactivity and bonding of molecules, introductory quantum mechanics, and intermolecular forces in liquids and solids and gases. Attention will be focused on aspects and applications of chemistry most pertinent to engineering.

Fees Course fee: $20 nonrefundable lab fee that covers cost of safety goggles, lab apron and breakage.
Permission Note Enrollment limited to: Engineering students; students from other colleges cannot take CHEM 2090 without written permission from the Chemistry Office of Undergraduate Studies.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: high school chemistry or permission of instructor.
Forbidden Overlaps Forbidden Overlap: Students may receive credit for only one course in the following group: CHEM 1560, CHEM 2070, CHEM 2090.
Comments CHEM 2090 is required of all Engineering freshmen and is a prerequisite for CHEM 2080. Entering students exceptionally well prepared in chemistry may receive advanced placement credit for General Chemistry by demonstrating competence in the advanced placement examination of the College Entrance Examination Board or in the departmental examination given at Cornell before classes start in the fall. Co-enrollment in a one-credit Academic Excellence Workshop (ENGRG 1009) is an option for engineering students who wish to enhance their understanding of the course material.
Regular Academic Session. Choose one lecture and one laboratory.

This course is for Engineering students. To register for the course, enter yourself on the Chemistry waitlist at http://chemlabs.arts.cornell.edu/waitlist.cfm. Processing of the waitlist will begin mid-July. See individual labs for starting dates. Latecomers for 1st meeting of labs forfeit their placement, but are not automatically dropped from the course.
