Laboratory introduction to principles and analytical techniques of nutritional research. Emphasizes analytical concepts and skills required to determine nutrient function and nutritional status of individuals. Topics include methods of nutrient, metabolite, and enzyme analysis in body fluids; methods for assessing individual food intake and nutritional status; and methods for assessing the composition of foods.

Permission Note Enrollment preference given to: senior Nutritional Sciences majors.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: Undergraduate biochemistry; NS 3450, NS 3310 preferred or (where possible) concurrent registration.

Outcomes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental theory and practice of common quantitative and qualitative methodologies used in nutrition and clinical research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of measurement error and its assessment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively report and interpret experimental data.
