Focuses on the process of effective strategy formulation and implementation from the perspective of the general manager of a business unit. Discusses situation analysis, tools for industry and company analysis, and development of business unit strategies. Builds on the core strategy course, with emphasis on applying frameworks and tools to current strategic issues facing real companies. Students gain experience, via assigned cases and classroom discussion in analyzing business problems/opportunities. Skills learned will be particularly useful in case-based interviews. The course draws heavily on the instructor's experience developing and executing strategy for several businesses at Corning Incorporated. Guest speakers from strategy consulting firms will present their approach to strategy assignments, highlighting the tools they find most effective. The final deliverable is a presentation in a mock Board environment that gives each student an opportunity to play the role of a strategy consultant working on a real company strategy.
