Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.

A seminar covering predominant theories of composed music of the last century. Comparison of primary sources, other established studies, and recent analyses. Pitch and non-pitch parameters; the problem of (a)tonality. The focus is notation-based repertoire, but other forms may be addressed through similar theoretical lenses. Weekly applications culminate in a final project: undergraduates may choose to combine composition and analysis; graduate students may pursue a topic related to their research.
