Topics in mechanics of materials applied to analysis and design of structural components encountered in mechanical and aerospace systems. Includes: torsion, bending, buckling, stress concentrations, and statically indeterminate structures. Solutions obtained using strength-of-materials approximations and elementary finite element formulations.

Outcomes
  • Students will be able to manipulate and interpret stress and strain matrices arising from multi-axial loading.
  • Apply strength-of-materials approaches to applications involving bending and torsion loading modes.
  • Perform elementary, two-dimensional, finite element analyses of the elastic response of mechanical components.
  • Relate numerical solutions to analytical solutions, where available.
