The course is intended for graduate students with a major or a minor in the American politics subfield. The course examines the origins and role of the American political parties and the American party systems, from the founding to the present. Particular attention is played on the importance of the parties in American political development, on their role in mobilizing and at times demobilizing participation, and in shaping and disseminating political ideologies.
