Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.
this course introduces its registrants to Africana Studies, primarily those who propose to major in it and, secondarily, all those who are interested in broadening their horizons regarding the place of Africana and its cognates in a solid liberal education that is true to its name. The course has three objectives: 1) to remedy the absence of Africa and its Diaspora in the education of American students; 2) introduce students to the debates and theories that have dominated Africana Studies over time; and 3) examine selected themes in Africana discourse. At the conclusion of the course, participants are expected to have a sophisticated understanding of the history of black peoples across the world, the emergence and evolution of the African Diaspora, the place of black people in the American space, the contributions of African-descended peoples and their accomplishments to the constitution of the fabric of American life and thought as well that of various disciplines within the liberal arts. Most importantly, they should not be in any doubt as to the history, course, and content of Africana Studies as a major in the modern university.
