This class will give an overall, hands-on, introduction to the world of user-centered product design. With a distinct human factors/ user experience foundation, the class will utilize current crowd sourcing, open innovation initiatives/competitions to provide an overall project structure that highlights real world results.

Permission Note Enrollment limited to: 14 students.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: completion of DEA 1101  and DEA 1150  (minimum grades of B-); B- or higher required or permission of instructor. 

Outcomes
  • Comprehend how ergonomics affects the product/human interface and demonstrate clear connections to proposed design solutions.
  • Develop and reinforce effective, practical and elegant design skills that inform systems thinking, critical analysis, creative problem solving, and design research techniques to achieve successful, holistic, well supported and documented product designs.
  • Understand the larger world of product design in terms of ecological decisions (cradle to grave), materials and processes (with a focus on rapid prototyping technologies), and professional practice (finding employment and describing the profession).
