Introduction to Southeast Asia

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.

This course introduces critical issues in the study of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) related to geography, history, religion, ideology, language, literature, society, culture, and politics and also in the ways that scholars have thought about them. Themes to be discussed include Indic versus Sinic orientations, tradition, modernity, warfare, colonialism, nationalism, revolution, globalization, and international relations. Students will have an opportunity to develop projects on topics of interest to them.
