Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2015-2016.
Buddhism has been integral to Chinese cultural development since the early Christian era (Eastern Han Dynasty). It stood on a par with Confucianism and Daoism, offering alternatives for shaping Chinese culture throughout the centuries. Chinese Buddhist art likewise provides insights into different stages of religious, philosophical, cultural, and social transformation in China. "The Jewel in the Lotus: Buddhist Arts in China," offers a broad, cross-disciplinary understanding of how a profound foreign influence on one of the oldest civilizations on earth transformed Buddhism and Buddhist art along the way.
