This course will survey the literature on American political development from the Founding to the late twentieth century.  The format each week will include a  critical reading of one of the major works from a different historical period and, in connection with that reading, brief proposals by the students in which they suggest alternative ways of investigating the same question.  The readings will include a wide sampling of works from intellectual, legal, economic, political, institutional, cultural, and social history.
