Hundreds of thousands of slaves were shipped from Africa to the islands of the French West Indies to satisfy Europe's insatiable demand for sugar and coffee. While French colonies in the Caribbean were profoundly important to France and the global economy of the eighteenth century, they were largely ignored by later historians. In recent years, however, some of the most exciting and controversial new research has focused on the culture and society of the French Caribbean and the relationship between the colonies and Europe, transforming our understanding of both.
