HIST 2022

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2014-2015.

This course examines the creation of the anticolonial Third World and its influence on the student and revolutionary movements of the 1960s. Through a series of case studies including Algeria, Bolivia, the United States, India, Mexico, and Brazil, we will consider how the theory and strategies of decolonization shaped the revolutionary consciousness of individuals and movements around the world in the early sixties, and how the dominant ideologies and practices of development, détente, imperialism, and state repression spurred the global uprisings of 1968. Finally, we will examine the popular memory of the global 1960s in the United States, attempting to account for subsequent revisions and elisions.
