This course introduces critical non-technological barriers for delivering sustainable buildings and brings attention to the role of human beings in building practice. Occupants and stakeholders, who utilize building systems, are key players in achieving sustainable building performance.  Input centers on a series of forces in planning, design, finance, construction, operation, and retrofit processes of buildings that impact climate change mitigation and building resilience.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Recommended prerequisite: DEA 2040.

Outcomes
  • Analyze occupant impact on building performance, and the impact of key drivers and players in delivering high-performance buildings and the different magnitude of their influence on outcomes delivered; be able to identify specific barriers in the fragmented value chain for sustainable building practice.
  • Recognize the interwoven nature of the stakeholder network in a building project and be able to evaluate the pros and cons of solution scenarios.
  • Search for leveraging points and effective interventions to change the status quo of the building sector; develop effective ways to collect and analyze data to inform solutions, express opinions and engage audience (specific stakeholders).
