BIOMG 4370
Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2014-2015.
Covers a wide spectrum of issues related to cell proliferation in eukaryotes. Lectures include various aspects of the regulation of cell division cycle and signal transduction pathways, with additional topics on oncogenesis, cell aging, and cell death. A discussion section covers primary literature in related areas.
When Offered Fall.
Permission Note Enrollment limited to: 20 students per discussion.
Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: two majors-level biology courses and BIOMG 3300, or BIOMG 3330, or BIOMG 3350, or BIOMG 3310/BIOMG 3320. Recommended prerequisite: BIOMG 2800 and BIOMG 4320.
Comments Students may take lecture for 2 credits or lecture and discussion for 3 credits.
Outcomes- After taking BIOMG 4370, students should be able to: Discuss and describe in writing: the major components of the core cell cycle machinery. the major regulatory loops that govern the progression of the cell cycle. the major components of several signaling pathways key to the regulation of cell proliferation. the key regulatory pathways that allow cells to decide between proliferation, senescence, or death. how feedback regulation are key to the proper functioning of regulatory pathways.
- Think analytically and use reasoning to solve problems relating to cell proliferation regulation.
- Formulate conclusions based on the analysis of biochemical, genetic, and molecular biology experimental results in areas related to cell proliferation regulation.
- Work as a contributing member of a team to: Read and discuss primary literature on a chosen topic related to cell proliferation regulation. Prepare and deliver a Powerpoint presentation on a chosen topic related to cell proliferation regulation.
