This course will explore the philological debates as engaged in by Samuel Johnson and William Wordsworth in Romantic England, and writers such as Chinua Achebe and Ngugi Wa Thiong'o in colonial and post colonial Africa. The goal is to explore contradictory responses to the fundamental question in African literature: In whose language?
