Course Description
Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2014-2015.
Visualizing El Barrio immerses students in a semester-long contemplation and class project that integrates artistic praxis with art history and literary studies to document the historical murals of East Harlem, otherwise known as Spanish Harlem or "El Barrio." These murals tell stories about people, places, and events that resonate with El Barrio's predominantly Latino/a community and American culture more broadly. The murals in East Harlem emerge out of a rich Latin American artistic tradition that migrated with the people who comprise the U.S. Latino/a diaspora. Through student research and documentation, "Visualizing El Barrio" will also participate in the preservation of East Harlem's historical murals, culminating in a celebration of the artwork with a student-curated exhibit of photographs and presentations.
