Comparative Mammalian Reproduction

Course information provided by the Courses of Study 2014-2015.

Comparison of patterns and physiology of reproduction among mammalian orders and species. Overall emphasis will be on the beneficial strategies and the unique physiological mechanisms for successful reproduction presented by the diversity among mammals. Environmental impacts and constraints on reproductive cycles will be explored. Domestic species will provide background and examples of basic physiology of reproduction for male and female animals: Monotremes to primates, lab animals, wild species, seasonal breeders and hibernators.

Prerequisites/Corequisites Prerequisite: ANSC 2400 Animal Reproduction and Development or equivalent.

Outcomes
  • Describe and interpret environmental influences on patterns and timing of reproductive cycles.
  • Classify females of diverse mammalian species by type of reproductive cycle.
  • Associate male secondary sex characteristics with testis function or regression.
  • Differentiate fetal developmental stages at parturition with maternal strategies for neonatal care and survival.
  • Assess the benefits of various reproductive mechanisms and successful strategies within varying geographical locations and environment.
