Women's lives are characterized by their personal experiences and histories, the relationships they form, and the communities and cultures in which they live. In this class, we draw on memoir and fiction, psychology, history, cultural studies, and developmental science to explore women's experiences in America in the 20th and 21st centuries. We counterbalance events that are part of all women's lives – such as coming of age – with more specific events such as widowhood or violence against women. By integrating autobiographical and fictional narratives with academic scholarship, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the complex realities of women's experiences across the lifespan.
