This course examines the emergence of community-based organizations as agents of economic development, emphasizing their actions to introduce an alternative approach to development that stresses the equitable outcomes needed to sustain communities, and assessing their role in reconfiguring development goals and practices to form the "social economy" in the US and around the world. The course is primarily designed to deepen the engaged learning experience of students who have served an internship in a non-profit, community organization.
