  • This class will examine how labor relations takes place in the hospitality industry with a focus on issues that have surfaced in the relationship between the Hyatt Corporation and UNITE-HERE. Both the history of labor relations in the hospitality sector and general labor relations analytic concepts will set the context for examination of recent issues with a focus on three cases – card check recognition, a work rule grievance dispute, and a recent collective bargaining dispute that involved a strike action. Note, Michael D’Angelo worked for a union-side law firm for several years before joining Hyatt and he will draw from his experience as a union advocate to help clarify union and worker interests in the three case disputes. Students will engage in role playing exercises centered around the three cases described above with access to both management-side and union perspectives and materials. Michael D’Angelo, through his role as head of corporate VP of Labor Relations at Hyatt, will help provide access to background information on all three cases supplemented by information that appeared in news reports and other documents.
