    • Bunting-Howarth, K

  • Oceans and coasts are vital aspects of our world—society, culture, ecology and economy. The coasts are home to 40% of the world’s population and serve as vital habitats and nursery grounds for multiple terrestrial and aquatic species. Additionally, these areas are on the leading edge of climate change impact. Sea level rise, compounded by coastal subsidence in some areas, impact the landscape, the groundwater and ecology. Ocean acidification has untold impacts on coral reefs, shellfish and other ocean inhabitants. There are multiple legal and management tools to use to address some of these concerns, while more innovative policy is needed in others. This course will have weekly readings with associated presentations by Cornell faculty and guest speakers and discussion. Student teams will develop white papers/fact sheets on timely ocean and coastal topics and reflect various policy and management options to address these unique issues as pre-determined by the instructor.

    • R
    • Royle, J

  • This course is an introduction to hierarchical modeling and analysis in ecology and natural resources. Hierarchical models are useful for understanding species occurrence, distribution and abundance, and population and community structure and dynamics. Classes will be a mix of formal lectures and computing “labs” demonstrating analysis of data. Lectures will cover basic elements of statistical modeling (generalized linear models, likelihood and Bayesian analysis, conditional probability, latent or unobserved states). Students are expected to have an academic background and current understanding of natural resources, environmental science, ecological sciences, or natural resource management. In addition: (i) proficiency in R software is necessary; (ii) knowledge of basic statistical modeling and inference concepts (likelihood estimation, random variables, binomial and Poisson distributions, linear models, generalized linear models, random effects); (iii) equivalent knowledge to an undergraduate level class in population estimation.

The topics covered will be determined based on student interest and will include both novel results and methodological questions.

  • Program R is a powerful statistical software (and language) for analyzing quantitative and qualitative datasets. It is free and open source, making it accessible, flexible, and powerful for a wide variety of applications. It is used heavily in the sciences and a variety of research fields. This course introduces the breadth of data manipulation and statistical computation possible with R and teaches the fundamentals that allow a basic use of R. Topics will include data manipulation and visualization, logic statements, and basic statistical analyses. The course will reinforce gained skills and comprehension through coding exercises. The course will provide students with a working knowledge of R, the ability to use and master R in the future for their own statistical analyses, and importantly, the skills to solve R coding issues when they inevitably arise. This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of programming or of R. Students will be required to bring a personal laptop to class. Undergraduates may enroll with instructor permission.
